Blueberries are also believed to improve nighttime vision, protect against age-related macular degeneration, which is a leading cause of vision in adults, reduce the effects of Alzheimer’s, and improve gastrointestinal health. Blueberries can help with both constipation and diarrhea and they can protect against ovarian cancer and colon cancer. Firm berries with a uniform color and whitish bloom are the best. Blueberries should not be watery, soft, or dull looking. When you are buying blueberries to make desserts like blueberry cheesecake, shake the plastic container the berries are in. If they do not move freely they might be moldy or bruised. Also, they might have been frozen and defrosted if they do not move around. There should not be any water in the container because this will rot the berries.
Wash and dry fresh berries gently because they are fragile. Washing them removes their protective bloom so do not wash them until just before you are going to make your blueberry cheesecake recipe or other blueberry dessert. If you are going to use frozen blueberries, defrost them and drain them before using. If you are cooking the recipe, you can use unthawed blueberries for a good flavor, adding a few minutes to the cooking time to allow for this.
