Stars and Stripes Jello Flag Cake

What better way to celebrate your nationality than with a jello flag cake? This jello dessert looks just as wonderful as it tastes and is full of creamy, fruity flavor. Plenty of jello recipes use fruit for flavoring or to add texture but this jello cake uses the fruit to make a stars and strips decoration on top.

You can use any flavor of jello in this jello recipe as long as it is red, so cherry, strawberry and raspberry are all good choices. You might have never thought of making patriotic desserts before but this patriotic jello recipe proves that it is very easy to do and this delicious jello cake will serve up to eighteen people.

Fresh strawberries and blueberries are in season in the summer, and since 4th of July is in the middle of the summer, you can use delicious fresh fruit to top this jello flag cake. Fresh berries are full of nutrients and they taste wonderful too. Use the freshest berries you can find and just rinse them before using them. You will need to hull the strawberries too, which means cutting the little green part out.

Patriotic Flag Cake with Jello and Fresh Berries

Ingredients -

1 package (8 serving size) red jello
12 oz pound cake, sliced into 10 pieces
1 ½ cups blueberries
4 cups fresh strawberries, halved
1 ½ cups boiling water
Ice cubes
Cold water
8 oz thawed cool whip

Preparation:

Combine the jello and boiling water and stir until dissolved. Add enough ice to the water to make 2 cups and pour this into the jello mixture. Stir until the ice melts then refrigerate until thickened.

This will take 5 or 10 minutes.

Line the bottom of a 13 x 9 inch dish with sliced pound cake. Slice one cup of the strawberries and add these, along with a cup of the blueberries, to the jello and stir. Spoon this mixture over the cake.

Chill for 4 hours or until firm, then spread the cool whip over the jello. Arrange the blueberries on top for stars and the strawberry halves on top to make the stripes.

This will keep in the refrigerator for a few days.
