If you fancy making a banana cream dark chocolate cake, you might be curious about the fruit you are using to make it. Bananas are an unusual fruit. They are smooth and creamy but they do not contain juice as such. Actually bananas are the fruit of an herb, since the banana "tree" is a giant herb, not a tree at all. Many fruit experts believe that bananas were the first fruit to be cultivated by humans.
Today they are the fourth largest food crop in the world and most of them come from India. Bananas are such a large part of the Ugandan diet that the same word is used in the language for "food" and "banana." A cluster of bananas is known as a "hand" of bananas and individual ones are called "fingers."
There are different types of bananas. The soft, sweet yellow ones you are probably most familiar with are called "dessert bananas." The most popular one is the Cavendish banana and these are the ones most often seen in grocery stores. Before the Cavendish banana, the most popular one was the Gros Michel, but in the middle of the 1900s, there was an outbreak of the fungal Panama disease, which ravaged most of the Gros Michel plants. Many people believe that the Cavendish will also be destroyed by Panama disease within twenty years, which is why scientists are trying to develop a disease-resistant hybrid banana that you could use instead for your banana and dark chocolate cake recipes.
Then there are plantains, which look like extra big bananas, but they have a savory flavor. These need to be cooked. You might not have tried plantains and you certainly would not use them in a banana cream cake because they are not sweet, but they are a dietary staple in some tropical areas. Alexander the Great discovered bananas in India in 327 BC and they were introduced to the United States in 1876 at the Philadelphia Centennial Celebration, where they sold for ten cents each. The average American eats about twenty-eight pounds of bananas every year.
The United Fruit Company changed its name to Chiquita and played a part in Central American politics in the 1900s, as they had a lot of holdings there. This company was nicknamed "The Octopus" because of its involvement with Central American politics and it is believed that Chiquita played a large role in the 1954 coup, which overthrew the government of Guatemala.
Did you know that half the people who are allergic to latex are also allergic to bananas, or that banana peel is edible? You would need to cook it to make it palatable though. The strings that go up and down the bananas are called Phloem Bundles and they distribute nutrients through the whole banana. Banana splits were invented in 1904 by an employee at the Tassel Pharmacy soda fountain in Pennsylvania, and this dessert is still popular today, along with more modern ones like banana cream dark chocolate cake.
