You will need individual jello molds to make these tasty jello desserts. If you do not have jello molds, you can use disposable plastic cups. This is actually a good way to do it. When you are ready to unmold the jello, poke a little hole in the base of the jello cup and that will break the vacuum, making the jello unmold more easily. There are lots of different jello recipes you can use if you have jello molds, so it is well worth investing in a few different ones.
There is more difference between jello in the US and the UK than simply the name of the product. Kraft is the company responsible for making and distributing jello in the US but Hartley's make and distribute jello, or jelly as it is called, in the UK. Hartley's used to be called Rowntrees.
Hartley's jello comes in tablet form, in strawberry, blackcurrant, tangerine, lime, pineapple, orange, raspberry, and lemon flavors. These are cubes of jello, all linked together, and you mix them with boiling water, and then add cold water. You can also get sachets of sugar free jello powder in the UK, and these come in blackcurrant, lime, strawberry, orange, raspberry, and lemon. The selection is rather limited in the UK if you compare all the kinds of jello available in the US. Jello pudding, instant pudding, and finger jello are unknown in the UK.
You can also get Hartley's quickset jello, which comes in strawberry, orange, and raspberry flavors. This jello sets in an hour and it is gelatin-free, so it is a good choice for vegetarians or vegans. There are also ready-to-eat jello pots in a few different flavors. Jello is available in nearly every UK supermarket. In Europe, you can get gelatin sheets and sometimes gelatin powder or jello. It is impossible to find sugar free jello in a lot of European countries.
For British people, "jelly and ice cream" is a very common kids' dessert. It is nearly always served at children's birthday parties and the most common combination is strawberry jello with vanilla ice cream. Plain jello and jello with fruit are also popular. Mixed fruit jello desserts are often served in the spring and summertime but you will not find treats like apricot and pineapple jello layered molds on an English dinner table because apricot jello is not available!
