Fruit pie has been enjoyed as a breakfast food since the 1800s and these were made with berries, apples and other fruits. Apple pies were first mentioned in a book in 1590 so they have been around for an especially long time. In fact, the history of pies can be traced right back to ancient Egyptian times. The early Greeks are believed to have given the idea to the early Romans.
Rather than using a pastry crust, like you would find with a no bake strawberry pie jello recipe for example, ancient Greek and Roman pies were wrapped in reeds. The reeds were to keep the filling in place, not for eating. The word "pie" was in common usage since the 1300s and the first ever pie recipe was for a honey and goat cheese pie in a rye crust.
Perhaps you enjoy making and eating a strawberry pie jello recipe or maybe you prefer savory pies. Early pies were meat pies and these were being made and served in England as far back as the 1100s. The crust was known as the "coffin" and there was very little filling compared to the amount of crust. Fowl such as chicken or smaller birds was a popular pie filling and the legs were often left sticking out of the pie side, to be used as a handle! The first fruit tarts and fruit pie recipes date back to the 1500s and the first cherry pie was given as a gift to Queen Elizabeth I.
The first English immigrants brought pie to the United States. The early settlers cooked their pies in narrow pans. Piecrusts were not made to be eaten but simply to hold the filling while the pie baked. The word "coffin" did not become "crust" until the American Revolution. Pie today is one of the most traditional American dessert recipes.
There are all kinds of pie recipes but the American Pie Council and Crisco did a survey in 2004 and discovered that one in four Americans likes apple pie better than any other kind, followed by sweet potato or pumpkin, chocolate, lemon meringue and then cherry pie. Three out of four Americans prefer homemade pie, which is a great reason to make your no bake strawberry pie jello recipe, and only one in a hundred Americans prefers pie from a diner. Two in three Americans prefer their pie plain, instead of served with whipped cream or ice cream.
