There is only one thing better than a homemade basic strawberry trifle and that is a basic strawberry trifle recipe made with strawberries you have grown yourself. So how do you grow strawberries in a pot? Actually, it is quite easy. Strawberries do well in pots and they will even grow indoors, as long as you put them on a sunny windowsill or give them some artificial sunlight. All strawberries need six hours of sunlight a day and you should rotate the pots so every part of the plant gets its share.
The three kinds of strawberries are day neutral, ever-bearing or June-bearing. Day neutral ones like cooler temperatures and will not produce blossom or fruit if it is too hot. Ever-bearing strawberries produce a crop in the spring and one in the late summer and June-bearing produce fruit in June. There are different varieties within these categories too.
Plant your strawberries in early spring if you live somewhere cold or in the fall if you live somewhere warm. If you are going to grow them indoors, plant them whenever you like. The soil should have a pH between 5.3 and 6.5 for the best results and it should be fertilized. Trim any roots to four inches and take any damaged parts off the plants. Soak the roots in water, and then plant the strawberry plants with the roots fanning out and the crown at the surface of the soil.
Take the blossoms off for the first six weeks after you plant them, if you are growing a day-neutral or ever-bearing variety. This helps the plants to become established before they expend a lot of energy on producing berries. Water them daily until the growing season and then only when the top inch of soil dries out. Fertilize the plants once a month with a high-potassium fertilizer; tomato fertilizers usually suit strawberry plants.
Strawberry pots hold one, two, or three plants at the top and runners in the sides but a lot of gardeners choose to fill all the openings with strawberry plants at the beginning. You will need potting soil, a PVC pipe, and a drill to plant a strawberry pot. Cut the pipe to fit inside the pot and drill 1/8 inch holes an inch apart down it. Part-fill the pot with soil and insert the tube, cap-down, into the middle. Add the remaining soil and plant each pocket. Put a funnel into the pipe and pour water down it. Plant the pockets and pick the strawberries for making your basic trifle recipe when they are red.
